A double-blind placebo-controlled study (n=16) compared 20 days supplementation with either 500 mg of bovine colostrum (BC) or placebo (whey protein). Gut permeability status was measured by differential absorption of lactulose and mannitol (L/M urine test) and stool zonulin concentration. Supplementation with bovine colostrum decreased and mostly restored to normal the two indicators of intestinal permeability. Researchers concluded that bovine colostrum supplementation is safe and effective for decreasing intestinal permeability in athletes who are at increased risk of developing intestinal permeability. Bovine colostrum may also have a preventative role in healthy people by restoring gut status following either antibiotic or NSAID use.
