Colostrum is Mother Nature’s gift to all mammalian species and has been around since the first mammals emerged on planet Earth. Most mammals, with the exception of humans, will die without their mother’s colostrum. Colostrum is necessary for the newborn’s optimal growth and development, and it has a profound effect on the immune system throughout life. Within the first few days of life, colostrum primes the infant’s immune system by creating immunity against potential viral and bacterial infections via the transfer of immunoglobulins and antibodies. It also seeds the gastrointestinal tract with beneficial bacteria, thereby populating the microbiome with the microorganisms that will produce vitamins and positively influence the gut-brain axis. These bioactives, collectively referred to as “immune factors” are one subset of the more than 200 identified substances in colostrum. Another subset, the “growth factors” promote growth, repair, and renewal of nearly every tissue in the body. Certain growth factors help maintain the integrity of the gut lining (i.e., the “tight junctions”) so that nothing from the G.I. tract crosses the barrier into the bloodstream. Without a secure gut lining, increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”) that remains unabated leads to allergies and autoimmune conditions. The incidence of autoimmune conditions is on the rise and today, many people suffer from multiple, seemingly unique, but all inflammatory-related, conditions. These result in significant human suffering and pain, appear earlier in life than most “diseases of old age,” and often result in premature death.
With an increasing focus on “natural medicine” and less on pharmaceuticals, the interest in bovine colostrum as a nutritional supplement is high. Part of my mission is to educate people about the health benefits of colostrum and the rationale behind its daily use. Many of the “living” components in bovine colostrum were readily available in raw, fresh dairy products that most people of my generation grew up on; modern processing, mass production, and unhealthy farming practices have destroyed the benefits of dairy. However, my nearly three decades researching the health benefits of bovine colostrum for human consumption has inspired and given me hope for the future of human health. I invite you on a journey of discovery as we re-discover and re-introduce the health benefits of bovine colostrum.
If you really want to understand what colostrum is, you must first understand what is in it – and how all of these bioactives have synergy. In the pages that follow, you will find a “work-in-progress” that describes the bioactives identified to date with links to Wikipedia and relevant literature sources which further our understanding of these components.

The Sovereign Health Initiative is committed to the belief that each person holds sovereignty over his or her body. We further support the principle that in order to take ownership of one’s health, it is necessary to make informed decisions through self-education. To this end, it is our aim to offer critical information to educate the public on how to live a lifetime in optimal health.
